More LA recaps. THE GROVE (featured in I Love You, Man! Watch out for it if you’re watching the movie). REDONDO BEACH (apparently where most of THE OC beach locations were filmed according to this website). And last but not least, CRAB FOR DINNER. Which needs no elaboration. Crab has a universal reputation for gastronomical awesomeness.
First up, THE GROVE!
Such a super pretty, quaint place for the rich & famous of LA to stroll, lounge, chill, push their adopted Afrikan/asian babies around (I kid you not. I spotted at least 3 couples with such) and walk their pedigree dogs. Boutiques, green lawns, bridges, a farmer’s market!, a tram (just for kicks), and a fountain. Every good place needs a fountain, I say. If I lived in LA, I’d go to The Grove every other day. It reminded me somewhat of Holland Village but with a more polished touch. Snazzaye.
Then it was vrroom vrroom to REDONDO BEACH in Orange County! Love this beach.
Sorry you can’t really hear what I’m saying cos the wind is like really strong, but basically I ramble on about how THE OC FILMING LOCATION WAS HERE!!! *excite excite*
/edit I realised that at the end of the vid you can hear Yong’s attempt at an overly extreme Singlish accent – “O SEE VEE DEE YOOO!” HAHAHA.
CROSS-REFERENCED EVIDENCE OF THE PIER IN THE SHOW:
I FOUND THE BAIT SHOP!!!!!!!
It was this old abandoned building that wasn’t in use. But I had a hunch.
AND I WAS SO RIGHT!!!!! EVIDENCE OF THE BAIT SHOP IN THE SHOW.
I am content. I can die a happy person. THE OC, HOW I’VE MISSED YOU. WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DIE, MARISSA. WHY. A little of me died when that happened.. and as a result I refused to watch Season 4 cos I felt it wasn’t complete without Marissa :( However, Sarah Spottiswood has accused my OC loyalty as a result. Thus I think I might have to swallow the pain and cringe my way through Season 4, just to prove that I AM A LOYAL OC FAN! Okay enough fanfare, sorry about that.
The proper BEACH. We spent alot of time watching cute little kids playing on the beach. Sooooo cute can. Anyway if you are wondering what is that black lump of thing in the photos, and if you REALLY want to know – IT IS A DEAD SEAL.
OMGED. IT WAS SO GROSS CAN. THE GROSSEST THING EVER. It was like a dead seal washed up on shore. And the white thing that you see is probably its SKULL cos the skin had been like eroded off. Omged I’m getting goosebumps typing this. I was so in denial I was like HAR NO LAH CANNOT BE but Yong was like YES IT IS PLEASE LOOK CAREFULLY and I was like EAAARGHHHH I AM SCARRED FOR LIFE. And the worst part was the children were happily playing in the sand really near it, totally oblivious.
Okay that aside, after the beach we had dinner at JOE’S CRAB SHACK (not the OC crab shack, sadly) and had glorious HUMONGOUS crab. We had crab until we could not have crab anymore. It was a dinner to remember.
Crab aka HAPPINESS!!! And pinkberry later on (DAPHNE! This is where we thought of you). And here is a video of the waiters at Joe’s crab shack doing their little dance. IT WAS SUPER CUTE. They did it like every half an hour I think. Hahaha very nice little dining gimmick.
What a happy place.
P.S. Check out super-into-the-dance asian dude in yellow cap. He must really love his job..
This post is primarily dedicated to all members of the WESTERN CARE GROUP OF GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH. HELLO I WENT TO RICK WARREN’S CHURCH!!!!! Flashback almost 1+ years ago to PDL period.
So this was LAST DAY of the roadtrip :( SADLY. Okay Saddleback was technically the only main thing I wanted to do before I left, and we had Redondo Beach on the hold if we had enough time (WHERE ALL THE OC BEACH PLACES WERE FILMED). However, we left the house at 830 and had to pick Yvette and then I forgot some stuff so we had to go to the apartment and then Rochelle fell asleep early the night before and forgot to google directions and the service was at 9AM. HAHAHA.
So…….. we drove around for ONE HOUR AND FORTY MINUTES – I kid you not, ladies and gentlemen. Ridiculooouuusssss. Half of this time Roch and Yvette were stopping by places to go in and ask for directions, and I WAS ASLEEP. FAST ASLEEP in the car. The best part was it was Sunday morning so the christian radio station was playing worship songs! Awesome. So I whenever I woke up I felt like I was in church but I was actually IN THE CAR. So we drove around for 1hr and 40mins and by that time, of course, we decided to go for the 1115am service. Well, we found the place in the end. CLEARLY.
FINALLY FOUND IT. And look at how many WELCOME TO SADDLEBACK signs that are. And this is because, SADDLEBACK CHURCH IS LIKE A THEME PARK. OMGED.
Please look at that. 1) SADDLEBACK CHURCH MAP. 2) VARIOUS TENTS for VARIOUS SERVICES 3) ENORMOUS THEME PARK ESQUE CAR PARK 4) THEME PARK CROWD.
FREE COFFEE!!!! And please look at that ridiculous architecture. IT IS SUCH AN AWESOME CHURCH. Even though its like big and huge and theme park ish, somehow the atmosphere is so nice and friendly and church ish and I MISS THAT SO MUCH HELLO GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH I MISS YOU.
And this is in the main sanctuary!! PLEASE CHECK IT OUT IT IS RICK WARREN. I was so excited when he came out, I had to take a photo even though he was beginning the sermon. Hurhurhur. And GUYZ, he has LOST WEIGHT. Let that be an inspiration for you all – by you all I mean Gideon.
And THIS. Is a woman who sang the Lord’s prayer after service. AND GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS, DOESNT SHE LOOK LIKE OPRAH!?!?!? I shall upload the bigger photos on facebook and we can have a great uproar there. Hahahahaha.
The message by Rick Warren that morning was So Heavy. AND INTENSE. You know, one of those messages that tug at your heartstrings and you know that you have to go back and do something about it although in your head you really don’t want to cos it will mean that your entire life will have to be rearranged. Yeah, that kind of message. And I don’t think it has entirely sunk in yet. Today I did do a confession of my sins though – not as detailed as I would have liked, but its a first step. And honestly, I love Saddleback. It is a powerful place with amazing ministry, and surely God has really blessed that place. I definitely want to return when I get the chance.
“Come now, let us reason together,”
says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.
After that there was no time for Redondo beach :( So it was to the airport (IM GLAD WE GOT THERE ALIVE….. patronizing driver turned psychotic) – had Denny’s for lunch and home sweet home it was for me :)
I LOVED THE OC, but honestly, I missed the Ihouse. It really is home right now. Although I had to take the BART by myself back and change trains at Oakland (the place where people die omged), and then take a long walk back from the train station to the ihouse AND IT WAS RAINING (and raining on my hot chocolate) and I did feel a little sorry for myself when people passed me by with umbrellas, it felt SO GOOD to reach the ihouse, take a warm shower, and then open the doors to a big welcome hug from friends – who insisted that “Ring us when you get back” did not refer to when I got back to the ihouse but when I got to the airport so they could pick me up at the train. SO MUCH FOR MY SAD WALK. OH WELL, it was a good experience of being Independent I guess. HAHA.
AND WELL ROCHELLE FLORES, our parallel lives have finally crossed. Little wonders, indeed.
After Huntington, we vroom-vroomed off to Newport Beach to find frozen bananas! NEWPORT BEACH IS SUPPOSED TO BE WHERE THE OC WAS SET, but apparently after doing our homework we realized that The OC wasn’t even filmed at Newport!!!! They filmed most of it in Malibu and Redondo Beach. I FELT SO CHEATED.
But doesn’t matter, the place actually looked similar (but then again all beautiful beaches look more or less the same) – and I think Newport was my FAVOURITE stop of the entire trip :) Because we were there till the sun set. And I had not seen a sunset in a million years.
EXPENSIVE NEWPORT HOUSES WITH THEIR EXPENSIVE YACHTS. Lifestyles of the rich and famous.
Newport Beach nearing sunset!! Awww gosh please look at how AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND BREATHTAKING IT IS.
So begins obsession with LIFEGUARD STANDS (which stem from emo Ryan-Marissa moments in the OC)
The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Roch and I sat at the lifeguard stand until the sun went down, and Experienced the Moment of Beauty. We had a very good talk over frozen bananas and hot chocolate, our first good talk since SUGARCANE DAYS back in secondary school. For a moment I did not have a care in the world, for a moment I didn’t have to think about the burdens on my heart, for a moment I was not self-absorbed – for a moment I was simply basking in the blessing that had been given – but just for a moment.
Moments like these come and go and you only get one chance to experience it. Fully Experience. I wished everyone back home could’ve been there with me to share the beauty and the greatness of that evening, to witness the splendour of His hands, so that we could all Be Still and know that He is God.
Hoho so here I am to post PEEKTURES of the WUNDERFUL weekend that was THE O.C ROADTRIP with my longlost senior from those nanyang band days, ROCHELLE FLORES <- honourary mention again! Better be grateful.
But before anything, LET ME JUST POST THE RIDICULOUS RIPOFF AIRPORT BREAKFAST that Yong and I had in the morning at about 7am. OmgednessabishigahFAINTEDridiculouuuusssssswhatashenjing.
So Roch picked me up from LAX and then vroom vroom off we went! (with me surviving on ONE HOUR OF SLEEP omytian – I had to stop by the kiosk to get some caffeine along the way) First stop, HUNTINGTON BEACH. Which is the beach where they filmed BAYWATCH. HAHAHAHAHA.
One of my Favourite things about LA – PALM TREES. EVERYWHERE. There will be millions of palm trees around my home in the future :D
Along the coast reaching the beach. BLUE BLUE SKIES GREEN GREEN GRASS AND SHINY SHINY WATER <3
Walking the pier. SO NICE OMGED. I know the picture is like TINY-ISH and cannot really see but too bad everything will be up on facebook laters anyway. This is for THE HIGHLIGHTS. HAHA. CAN YOU SPOT OLD PEOPLE WALKING HAND IN HAND????
The millions of SURFERS in the sea. SURFER SEALS! Don’t they look like seals. Anyway it is verys cools to watch them surf. COOLS DOT COM.
And here we have the face of my patronizing driver/tourguide/landlady for three days and two nights. HAHAHA. YOU IS THE BEST.
Very sadly, the awesome weather only lasted for Friday :( Because, I AM THE WEATHER JINX. I brought the Northern Cali weather to Southern Cali!! I AM SO SAD. Okay anyway. Pictures of newport beach up next! Hwahaha.
I am in the O.C.
5am dodgy walk to the train, one hour dodgy train ride to the airport.
(Thank God for Yong)
$9 airport breakfast ripoff.
One hour of sleep, survival on PURE SUGAR/CAFFEINE.
Huntington Beach, surfer seals!
I love palm trees.
Newport Beach, frozen bananas and hot chocolate.
SITTING ON THE LIFEGUARD STAND WATCHING THE SUNSET. A RYAN MARISSA MOMENT. (Except Rochelle was Ryan okay this is just wrong.)
I love lifeguard stands. I need to buy one for my future home.

11pm: the earliest I’ve slept since Jan 14th.
MY FIRST REAL ROADTRIP, complete with SINGALONGS AND HEADBANGING.
Our favourite station, KOST 103.5 – the BEST songs.
Ridiculously expensive O.C. -esque houses.
THE BEACH THE BEACH BUT IT IS TOO COLD TO TAN SO SAD.
Seagulls surround us to attack our food.
Tiny baby birds DISAPPEAR before our eyes. Predator: THE WAVES. Very Traumatizing.
Three hours at the outlets.
A LONG DRIVE to eat PHO, their favourite Viet place.
Back in the apartment that has no furniture but a table.
I shall return to my sleepingbagbed.
Tomorrow morning we are visiting SADDLEBACK CHURCH! RICK WARREN! *flashback PDL video*
I just calculated expenses. I should NEVER convert USD to SGD. Never.
Quotes of the day:
Amanda: “OH MY TIANS” (HAHAHA ITS CATCHING ON, PEOPLE)
Deborah: “I HATE HOW MONEY ACCUMULATES.”
Lois: “A pattern of being random is an oxymoron.”
Rochelle: “THIS IS RIDICULOUS.”
Word of the day: Patronizing.
Song of the day: POKERFACE.
Thought of the day (after visiting all the gazillion beaches and having experienced and witnessed all forms of BEAUTY AND WONDER):
I need a boyfriend and a dog.
HAHAHA. I have spent one and a half days with Rochelle Flores and memories of my BAND DAYS are flooding back. Good talks about band days. Life lessons from band days. Character building, we say. And Rochelle is a very PATRONIZING host. HAHA. OUR PARALLEL WORLDS ARE COLLIDING. I cannot even believe that I am here.
